As much as I love the whimsical, anything-goes nature of fashion, I have never been one to follow trends. Now don’t get me wrong. If capes happen to be in, and I see a cape I like, I will not hesitate to buy it. But the same can also be said if capes happen to not be the “it” item of the moment. If I see something I like, I will buy and wear with pride regardless of what the popular notion is.
With that said, I have wanted to integrate velvet into my wardrobe for quite some time now. Two problems with that are: 1) I live in Los Angeles. When does it ever get cold enough to wear that here?! And 2) I have no idea how I would even go about introducing that lush textile into my daily arsenal of randomness. After much thought, I decided that it makes sense to start with an accessory. Shoes [& handbags] are an area where you can truly take the most risk. Any one of the above styles can be paired with jeans + tee (the unofficial LA uniform) for day or transitioned to night with a sassy cocktail dress. And to sweeten the deal, affordable options can also be found by H&M, Zara, & Jeffrey Campbell, and Sam Edelman just to name a few.
